Masterclass Hair: Fashion & Fantasy Chapter: Curls

Grande Maison is delighted to announce one of the most exciting projects we’ve ever had the pleasure to work on. A two-day masterclass with “hair-thinking war-machine”, Laurent Philippon. You’ll know Laurent’s work from the pages of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, ID, and perhaps even from the award-winning music video to Gwen Stefani’s ‘It’s My Life’. Laurent moved to Paris in his early-twenties to become a fire-fighter, but already his passion for hair burned stronger. He found himself walking into the salon of hair-legend Alexandre de Paris - and a life-time bond was built. Philippon cut his teeth as Alexandre’s assistant, working in the houses of Chanel, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, and many more. Today, after one of the most exciting and experimental careers our industry has to show for it, Laurent is not only one of the most technically able artists in hair, but also one of the most free-thinking. His book, Hair: Fashion & Fantasy, changed the way we think about the art of styling, from its origins to its future - its culture to its couture.

THE INTERMINGLING AND THE IRON

26th of January 2020

‘The most amiable is the flowing curl; and the many waving and contrasted turns of naturally intermingling locks ravish the eye with the pleasure of the pursuit, especially when they are put in motion by a gentle breeze.’ William Hogarth, The Analysis of Beauty (1753

Bette Davis, Anita Page - the Silver Screen! Beginning with Marcel Waving, the wave style technique that defined so much of the 20s and 30s, Laurent Philippon will demonstrate the complexity of a look which appears so natural when done right. “When I first saw Alexandre de Paris doing it, it gave me such strong emotion - it’s magical. Super technical, and yet it seems very organic. On some people, these waves actually occur naturally. It’s very rare. But I’ve seen it.” The techniques and traditions of the roaring 20s pass through Laurent’s hands just as naturally, thanks to his time as a student of Alexandre de Paris - one of the industry’s most famous stylists.

“It’s very marked by the era (1920-30s) but it’s not just about the look, it’s about the journey to get there.” Explains Laurent Philippon. “Marcel Waving forces you to learn every aspect of the curling iron. When you master the wave, you can do anything that’s possible with this tool. When you understand the relationship between the hair and the curling iron, and the world opens up.”

Curls have come a long way from the mystical waving of post-prohibition. “Grunge was all about no effort. Curls which exploded from the head, and it looked like nothing had been done to the hair. It was really raw.” But how does that translate to the pages of magazines and the stages of fashion shows? “I had a problem because some model’s hair just didn’t look good unless you worked on it. So I invented a texture to give an amazingly healthy look - the hair we all dream to have - through a curling iron technique. In the end, it looked like nothing had been done. It looked like the model just woke up like that. That’s one of my secret weapons.” And guess what? He’ll be showing you exactly how he does it.

This masterclass will be split in half, with both a demonstration and a hands-on phase, so you get the most out of your time with Laurent. But sign up soon, spots are going fast!)
